Cranfield Masters in Security Sector Management
The Masters in Security Sector Management (MSc) Programme International Advisory Board (IAB) consists of a selected panel that represents a substantial level of experience, knowledge and expertise across the global security sector community. Within this group government, academia, international organisations, non-government organisations and the private sector are all included
The Board will convene once a year to review the masters programme and provide guidance. Members participate on the Board in their personal capacity.

Terms of Reference for the International Advisory Board
Masters Programme in Security Sector ManagementThe Masters in Security Sector Management (MSc(SSM)) Programme International Advisory Board (IAB) consists of a selected panel that represents a substantial level of experience, knowledge and expertise in the global security sector community. Within this group government, academia, international organisations, non-government organisations and the private sector are all included.
The Board is required to scrutinise the direction and content of the Masters in Security Sector Management programme and, specifically to:
- Advise the Chairman of the IAB with regard to any major proposals for changes to the structure and content of the MSc course, and to give advice on long and medium term developments deemed to be desirable;
- Provide comments to the Head of the Defence Management and Security Analysis (DMSA) Department on the student body and prospective students where appropriate, and advise on standards for entry to the programme;
- Meet with the MSc's Academic Leader, Director Operations Centre for Security Sector Management (CSSM), Faculty Dean and Head of the DMSA Department at least once annually to discuss such matters as may arise;
- Promote the interests of the MSc course nationally and internationally;
- Receive an annual report on the current MSc course.
Inaugural Meeting of the International Advisory Board
The inaugural meeting of the MSc (SSM) International Advisory Board, chaired by the Rt Hon Clare Short MP, took place at Shrivenham on 12 September 2007. The board was briefed on the rationale and context for the course, together with the course structure, teaching methodologies and learning logic pyramid. A wide range of issues were discussed and a set of important challenges were identified to help guide the early direction of the programme. Board members have indicated that they wish to take an active role in the development of SSM education programmes. They decided to meet again in 6 months to “take stock”.
