The handbook has been produced by a collaborative effort among researchers and
practitioners across Africa. Core members of the writing team are: Nicole Ball,
'J. Kayode Fayemi, 'Funmi Olonisakin, and Rocklyn Williams. Contributors to the
handbook are: Len LeRoux, Ntsiki Motumi, Janine Rausch, and Mark Shaw.
The handbook has also been the subject of consultations during regional meetings
held by affiliated research networks in Western and Southern Africa during which
researchers, policy makers, and practitioners gave generously of their time. The
objective of these consultations was to obtain input from a wide variety of local
stakeholders on the draft handbook and to deepen the authors' understanding of
good and bad practice. Workshop participants are listed in Appendix 1. Information
obtained through these consultations has also been incorporated into ongoing research
projects carried out by the Centre for Democracy & Development (Lagos/London),
the Center for International Policy (Washington, DC) and the Security-sector Transformation
Project of the Institute of Security Studies (Pretoria).
The work has been carried out with the aid of a grant from the International Development
Research Centre, Ottawa, Canada and the UK Department for International Development
(DFID). The editors and authors would like to thank the two organisations for
providing funding for the preparation of this handbook and to CDD support staff
who managed the logistics of the project. They would also like to thank Robin
Luckham, Eboe Hutchful, Malcolm Holmes, Anicia Lala, Gavin Cawthra, Luc van de
Goor, and Tsjeard Bouta for their comments and advice.
